The e-mails of perdition

"The news that new Labour has tripled its spending on press officers since taking office and now employs 3,200 of these eager, importuning little monkeys may have come as a shock to you, but it didn’t surprise me one bit… The press officers — the likes of Jo Moore, Martin Sixsmith, Campbell himself — too frequently became stories that were far more damaging to the government than the potential stories they were (usually) trying to suppress. To the cynical observer it appears that these days the government lies or dissembles quite reflexively; it has become its default position, even when it knows that the lie or half-truth will be exposed sooner or later." —Rod Liddle
